What drives the artisan behind Espartos Manolito to spend so much time and effort harvesting esparto grass, preparing it, designing, weaving and selling the finished piece?
As I sit in Valderrobres, surrounded by the tranquil banks of the Matarranya, I am filled with a sense of contentment and purpose. My journey as a craftsman began with curiosity and a desire to learn the art of basket weaving. What started as a hobby has evolved into a passion, with each new piece a reflection of my growth and experience.
I've always been drawn to the idea of transforming everyday items into woven works of art – from humble brillo pads to intricate shoes. But it's the weaving of esparto grass that has truly woven a sense of responsibility into my daily life. This ancient craft has become an integral part of my being, and I'm deeply committed to preserving and honoring its traditions.
I approach my craft with honesty and integrity, adhering to the rhythms of good workmanship that have been passed down through generations. I harvest and process the plants myself, carefully selecting the finest materials to ensure each piece is of the highest quality. This connection to the natural world inspires my work and fuels my creativity.
Above all, I weave with joy – joy in the process, joy in the creation, and joy in the knowledge that each finished piece bears the mark of love and dedication. It's this passion that drives me to continue perfecting my craft, and to share it with others.
